Nothing like old photos to bring back memories! I would have preferred some more glamorous shots but I obviously have no control over the photographer.
In the top photo is a wall drawing that I developed over the 3 years of the PhD. In this work I was exploring the place of the studio and how it is informed by work on the site of Gundaroo Common. My work on the common is done on the horizontal and so the shift from my body back to the vertical was challenging in terms of mark making. On such a large scale I found that my body influenced the line markings becoming a weave of the scale of my body. Along with these were fingerprints that I rubbed on with charcoal and often erased. Over time I felt that I took on the solidity of the wall and hinted at its eventual decline back into dust and particles.
Behind me is “Shroud for a Waterway”, a drawing made up of sheets of Japanese paper sewn together from drawings done on Gundaroo Common. The drawings are informed by all the dams that block the waterway that once ran through the common.
On the table are lots of experimental lithographs, none of which have made it to the final cut.
On the wall in the bottom photo are two woodcuts with the working title “And the shadows form themselves and go”. They were drawn directly under the remnant forest trees on the common. The idea is that the land holds memories of the events that have occurred there and the memories of these events haunt us until they are resolved. I am particularly concerned with acknowledging the presence of Indigenous Australians on the land and the effect of colonization on their cultures. There are 9 of these shadows and I have tried a myriad of processes with them from printing to wall drawings to sculptures but have not managed to make them resonate. They may not make it to the final cut either. So basically these photos show works in progress that lead up to my final exhibition which will open on 17th June. Please come.
Thanks
Jan
Hi Jan,
I saw Patsy Payne this morning and she has welcomed my application for Masters. Patsy mentioned a number of artists working in a similar context, and this included you. I would love to meet you and have a look at your work in progress .. Patsy also mentioned that the studio you are in would be the one I would be sharing with one other next year. (so it would be good also to have a sneak preview. I am in Canberra on Fridays ..
Is your exhibition at the art school in June?
Regards
Lynne
