ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
My interest in human frailty based on fear has influenced my artwork is about death and spiritual transformation. It is informed by the Old Testament psalm De Profundis, a Latin term meaning "out of the depths", and a prayer known in Christian religions as the Prayer of the Dead. The psalm has provided inspiration over the yeas to artists including writers and musicians. My visual ideas use these writings and musical scores to develop an abstract visual language based on a series of mixed media panels and photo-media works. The relation of these themes to the writings of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and others in the medical and psychological fields who deal with issues of emotional stages of responding to death and the impact on transforming the human spirit are explored in the images. The works are made with pigmented materials to create varying textures and in the case of photograms are made with refuse materials.
