reflex action

Don’t miss the great show Reflex at M16 curated by Geoff Farquhar-Still, open this weekend until 16th August. In the footsteps of the great NZ mobilist Len Lye – my spies tell me his Melbourne ACMI retrospective is surprisingly good. If you miss it in Melbourne it will be at the AGNSW in December. But who would have thought there were seven young artists (all with a connection to the ANU School of Art) who were producing mobiles? Matt Smith (PhD Sculpture) is the only one currently in the ANU School of Art postgraduate program, but yes, there’s something happening here!

11.00 Artists Talks – Cecilia Heffer, Vicki Mason, Ria Vlavianos

Vicki’s title: Working across classifications: In the 1970s, a handful of jewellers were forerunners in bringing textile materials and processes into the craft/art jeweller’s repertoire, within my work I’m hoping to build on this tradition.

Baskets Reveal History in the 1948 AASEAL Expedition

Dr Louise Hamby, Post-doctoral Fellow, Research School of Humanities, ANU

Departing from Adelaide in March 1948 the historic American–Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land (AASEAL) was led by the South Australian Museum’s honorary associate ethnologist, Charles P. Mountford. Many items were collected during the expedition, in particular bark paintings, one of Mountford’s great passions. As a result, other items collected, such as fibre baskets and bags were not given as much consideration.

This seminar aims to try and bring together this dispersed group of fibre objects, currently being held in the Australian Museum, the South Australian Museum, the National Museum and the National Museum of Natural History. An analysis of the collected group will provide a snapshot of styles and forms that were being made in the mid twentieth century in Arnhem Land, keeping in mind that these items were purchased by team members and may not have been totally representative of objects in the everyday and ceremonial life of the communities. In order to give some perspective to this historical trajectory fibre works from Milingimbi will be given a closer examination. Perspectives from Milingimbi artists currently producing fibre work and others familiar with objects from sixty years ago will also be discussed

Louise Hamby is a Postdoctoral Fellow, lecturing in the Museums and Collections Graduate Program at the Research School of Humanities, ANU. She is currently working on an ARC Discovery Grant: Contexts of Collection- a dialogic approach to understanding the making of the material record of Yolngu cultures (2008-2011). Her research interests include historic and contemporary material culture from Arnhem Land

AAANZ call for papers

the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand Conference call for papers is on: the conference is happening in Canberra this year in November, so presenters won’t even have to travel to speak. You can find details on the conference website and deadline for abstracts is 31 August.

Here’s news of “an innovative new partnership between the Australia Council for the Arts and Queensland Conservation Council will see $15,000 mentorships going to young and emerging artists to tackle environmental challenges in their work.

The mentorships will involve artists being mentored by environmental activists to learn about issues ranging from climate change to biodiversity conservation to develop an artistic piece which brings together the environment, community and art.  Artists will also receive support from Feral Arts who will provide community, arts and cultural mentoring.

Ryan Dillon, Queensland Conservation Executive Member says the HELM-Arts (Healthy Environment Leadership Mentoring) project is innovative because it helps develop a new generation of artistic leadership.

“This project will expose, train and support young artists and shape them into effective leaders who can advocate for a sustainable world through their art,” Dillon says.

“Queensland Conservation, the peak body for more than 60 environmental groups in Queensland, is well placed to build closer links with the art sector,” Dillon says, “and we are hoping to attract nominations from a broad range of artists, geographical locations and ethnic backgrounds.”

“We created the term HELM-Arts as we feel it is up to young people to take the helm and lead the way with environmental change,” Dillon says.

Expressions of interest close 3 August 2009 and further information is available online here.

TTP brings together the expertise and experiences of scholars and
artists in a format that permits the thinking and doing of time with an
aim towards mutual elucidation. Drawing together papers, panels, diverse
performance practices, exhibitions, installations, screenings and
workshops, this transdisciplinary conference and inter-media event
initiates a global discussion, investigation and critique of temporality

Call for Papers – “Art Worlds” Symposium and Craft Design Enquiry Journal

Call for Papers – “Art Worlds” Symposium, 19-20 Sept, ANU.

Sam Bowker extends a warm invitation to all current and recent postgraduates in Art Theory and the SofA to participate in the upcoming “Art Worlds” Symposium, 19-20 Sept, ANU. Though we designed it as an Art History postgraduate event, we would be really excited to see our colleagues from your lovely Art Deco building join us for a weekend of discussion, new ideas, and recent research. It’s intended as a forum for postgraduates (current and recent, including Honours students) to share their work with their ANU colleagues and a wider audience. The deadline for abstracts is Thursday 20 August 2009. (Sam Bowker).
